Aung Oo graduated in Mechanical Engineering from Yangon Institute of Technology, Myanmar, and subsequently obtained a Master of Engineering degree from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT), Bangkok, Thailand, with specialization in Energy Technology. A scholarship from the French government supported his study at AIT. His Master’s thesis assessed the electricity generation potential of the wood and agri-industries in selected South-East Asian countries. He was awarded the most outstanding academic performance among students graduating in the Energy Technology Program. Upon graduation, he joined the Rational Use of Energy Team as a Research Associate. His work included technical and financial feasibility studies of energy conservation measures in industries and commercial buildings, and the assessment of regulatory measures affecting energy efficient and environmentally sound technology changes.
Aung received a scholarship to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University, Newfoundland, where his doctoral research involved the experimental study of turbulent flow heat transfer in gas turbines. Aung earned his Ph.D. in 2001, and joined Imperial Oil Research in Sarnia for six years as a Research Engineer where his work included the development of engine and vehicle tests for screening automotive fuels and lubricants, analysis of the test data, and conducting technical and financial feasibility studies for new multi-cylinder engine tests.
